Additional coverage for more peace of mind
-
Compensation with your insurer
This additional service enables a much simpler process for claim submission. Once the paperwork is completed at the place of the event, the claim can be submitted to BALTA instead of the insurer of the party at fault, as was previously the case. BALTA will pay the compensation or repair the vehicle and settle all formalities with the insurer that issued the MTPL policy to the party at fault. The insurance coverage includes accidents occurring within the territory of Latvia.
BALTA will ensure the quality of your vehicle’s repairs and the appropriate amount of repair costs.
-
Accident insurance
Accident insurance will provide you and your family with the security you need to avoid financial losses in the event of an accident. If you buy accident insurance together with an MTPL policy and you use a road vehicle, BALTA will cover your medical expenses and offer compensation in the event of disability or death resulting from a road traffic accident not covered under the civil liability law.
-
24-hour roadside assistance
We will assist you if your car has a problem on the road, be it a flat tyre, using incorrect fuel, a minor incident, or any other similar event. Just call us and our support team will come to your rescue!
-
Theft insurance
If you buy this additional cover for your MTPL insurance policy, you will also get compensation if your car is stolen or hijacked. The sum insured for theft is the actual value of the vehicle at the time of the accident, up to a maximum of 7000 euros. The deductible for theft is 10% of the insured amount, but not less than 70 euros.
MTPL insurance proceeds limits

Damage to persons: 5.21 million euros

Frequently asked questions about MTPL insurance
The MTPL insurance policy takes effect once purchased, i.e., it is paid for, or at 00:00 on the date specified as the date, on which the policy takes effect.
If your vehicle has been in a road traffic accident caused by a third party and your MTPL insurance policy has the ‘Compensation with your insurer’ additional risk, you can report the accident to BALTA by calling 67533375.
More detailed information about claim submission and receiving compensation is provided in the Compulsory Civil Liability Insurance of Owners of Motor Vehicles Law (MTPL Law).
If your vehicle has been involved in an accident, you will always receive compensation from the MTPL insurer of the party at fault. However, an incorrectly filled-in European Accident Statement may delay the payment of the insurance proceeds. If you have any questions, we recommend that you contact BALTA’s specialists or call the police. Remember that the European Accident Statement procedure applies to accidents involving two vehicles with no casualties and no damage to the property of third parties.
We have simplified this process by allowing you to claim the accident with BALTA if you have the ‘Compensation with your insurer’ additional risk included in your MTPL insurance policy.
Yes, you can call the BALTA claims centre at 67533375 to get assistance filling in the European Accident Statement.
Within the territory of the Republic of Latvia, having an MTPL policy in paper format is not compulsory, as an electronic record of the existence of the MTPL policy is stored in the database of the Latvian Motor Insurers’ Bureau, and the existence of the MTPL policy is checked electronically by the Traffic Police, Road Traffic Safety Directorate, and other agencies. When travelling abroad, you must take a printout of your MTPL policy with you, as the traffic police in other countries do not have access to the Latvian MTPL policy register.
A printout of the MTPL policy that we issued and legally certified (sealed and signed by a company representative) is considered an original copy of the BALTA MTPL policy.
The MTPL policy is valid in Latvia and in the other countries of the European Economic Area: Lithuania, Estonia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, as well as Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Andorra.
If you want to go to Albania, Azerbaijan, Morocco, Moldova, Macedonia, Tunisia, Turkey, or Ukraine, you must buy a Green Card.
No, the standard MTPL contract is valid in Latvia, the countries of the European Economic Area, and Switzerland
If an insured event occurs, the third-party liability insurer of the owner of the vehicle at fault covers the damage to the injured parties up to the following limits of liability:
- for damage to movable property: up to 1,050,000 euros, regardless of the number of third parties;
- for damage to persons: up to 5,210,000 euros, regardless of the number of third parties.
No, compensation for personal injuries sustained in a road accident must still be claimed via the insurer of the party at fault.
Yes, with BALTA, you can also claim expenses related to the victim’s movable property if they were in the victim’s vehicle at the time of the accident
It’s exactly the opposite! It will be much easier, faster and simpler. Also, about 80% of registered MTPL claim submissions are done via phone or e-mail.
The BALTA MTPL ‘Compensation with your insurer’ claims procedure provides for only one situation in which the victim of a single road accident has to submit a claim to two insurers: if the victim has losses due to personal injury caused to another person. To get compensation for personal damage, the victim has to contact the insurer of the party at fault, but the compensation for vehicle and property damage is handled and paid by BALTA.
Only the injured party can receive compensation in an MTPL claim. If a driver has caused the accident, they must use their MOD (motor own damage) insurance policy.
